Landscapes

The landscape of Umbria, with its areas of tilled and uncultivated land, suggests a patchwork of planes moving into deep space. The breadth is spectacular and the light shimmers. Houses, small towns, and churches that predate the Renaissance, punctuate the vistas.

As a painter of gritty urban scenes, finite in their depth, I find many new challenges in painting this panorama. Not unlike the city, the landscape of Umbria is man-made. Farmers have structured the fields to plant the crops. This geometry has given me the linchpin for my paintings. Nature, on the other hand, has provided the topography, and the weather and light that create atmosphere.

The Umbria landscape also tells a story. It is a celebration of nature's rhythms and man's harnessing its richness. I am in awe of this land.
